  1. I buy for myself and others

A Major upgrade at a very low cost. How can one go wrong at this price point.
After a lot of research and procrastination I decided to buy this refurbished HP 800 G1.I paid $302 after tax and it is at even a lower cost now. How could one go wrong at the price of RAM and 1TB SSD alone. I read negative reviews but I must say this HP arrived well packaged and as anyone should, I opened the PC to make sure nothing came loose in shipping. I added a much better wireless adapter than was supplied , but I have all my machines ( many dedicated for specific diagnostic instrumentation applications ) all of which are CAT5 hardwired to the LAN almost 100% of the time. I am in the process of building a NAS based on a HP Z420. I upgraded to the 800 G1 from a Lenovo i3 based machine with 8GB of RAM and a mechanical drive. I looked at the cost of upgrading it and it surely added up to more than I paid for this refurbished HP. This machine blows the Lenovo away in a big way. There is zero bloat-ware, it boots at lightning speed, handles AutoCAD 3D / Mechanical Desktop, , ORCAD schematic capture to design rule checking, to netlist generation and PCB Layout without a problem. It is also a night and day improvement when it comes to Video editing and rendering. It is a very fast process where before I would walk away and pray my project completed before I grew old and was in a rest home 😉 , DVD architect, Reaper, Vegas, Sony Music Studio, Sony Movie Maker, and other demanding applications run very efficiently now even as I do other research and multitask on the second monitor. The i7-4770 Intel processor is not a beast of a processor but this platforms combination of hardware seems to work extremely well, actually beyond my expectations. I added a 3TB mechanical drive partitioned in half, Drive E is the backup drive, and Drive F is where I put a massive collection of technical documents , reference and electronic project pictures, documentation and the working files of numerous electronic, factory automation, and vacuum tube designs I have done over the years.I am not a Gamer as I prefer to be a creator so I cannot comment on Gaming but one would be hard-pressed to get a demanding video card into this unit and with the SFF Power Supply. This brings me to the Cons: I have not seen a SFF Power Supply of higher Wattage available for these machines. If someone has, let me know. in retrospect there are only 3 SATA connectors on the Motherboard taken by the DVD-RW, 1TB SSD and now my 3TB mechanical drive occupying the third. adding a PCIe SATA card is out of the question as I am very sure that would be taxing on the SFF PS. I also believe that 32GB RAM is the maximum for this machine…..But who’s complaining at $300 dollars it is what it is and a major upgrade at that ! I’m just adding this as a FYI so folks don’t over tax the SFF platform.I Love the machine ! and thank you.BTW: My video editing is at a amateur level and I know there are more complex and demanding videos and more demanding software at the professional level. Also I do more simplistic 3D CAD Modeling than many folks. I cannot give any input in those areas at higher levels.I do have complex music with many tracks using software DAW programs and various VSTs and analog instrument inputs with a nice Pesonus studio interface , Midi sound banks etc. at the end i end up with many layers going on. Those projects run very well on this $300 HP. With no latency issues. Also video quality and resolution is fine for the above mentioned programs I use. . For gaming ( and the popular programs I read keep getting more demanding , and it drives the hardware industry Hmmm ? Anyhow again ‘ I think ‘ one may want a different platform as I have friends that are big into gaming. With Power Supplies, liquid cooling With a crap load of fans , RGB everything is some kind of Rage for some reason. And the price of a GPU card for gaming is outrageous and many ate huge. I do like the fancy GPU software control for those cards. . Add gaming to a product and it costs much more. I’m not hating by any means. But this is not the platform for anything close to those gamibg platforms. May work fine as is but response and smoothness I suspect would suffer. This works great for my needs and I would like to look for a higher wattage Supply in this SFF as to add a PCIe for added , and fast SATA ports and a RAID drive array. If I can’t that’s fine , it is still great machine for the price and it is my main workstation. My personal NAS will handle the Raid issue. enterprise NAS it is not. With the awesome free NAS software and not at a massive cost , it will be fine.If your like me with your needs you can’t beat this bargain price relative to the great performance.Lots of rambling there but with that processor it exceeded my expectations. Big time. .

    Bang for the buck
For the price I was worried I wouldn’t get the actual specs stated. That worry was unfounded. I got the 64-bit Windows 10 Pro, 32G of Ram, Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-4770 CPU @ 3.40GHz , 1 TB hard-drive, and a mouse and keyboard. As well a power cord, no audio/video cables or speakers. This is a refurbished item so there was minor scuffing, 3 out of 4 of the rubber buttons it rests on were not present.I haven’t tested the CD-Rom as it’s rarely used these days. The mouse and keyboard are very fragile and I expect them to break within 6 months to a year if not sooner, however, they were new in their respective boxes. Plus I actually like the feel of the keyboard and it’s responsive enough to type this out. When I popped open the case it was a little stiff getting the panel off and there were no screws holding it on, mind you it is a latch release but there are holes for screws. Inside it appears clean and dust free, the 4 ram sticks do not have a heat sink covering them, definitely not for overclocking and I didn’t bother checking the Hz they run at.I was impressed with the CPU heat sink fan, not a stock fan and will keep it cool for sure.I can’t tell whether the power supply is stock or replaced but for a ~10 year old unit I would guess it’s been replaced or will be in need of that soon.As stated the hard-drive is a 1 TB hard drive though I only got 884 GB total and 69 GB was already used, meaning it’s probably a lower quality hard-drive. My anticipation is it will fail, so a SSD upgrade may be in order. For the graphics it is stock Intel HD Graphics 4600, the controls are user friendly and my screen resolution is crisp on my old Sony Bravia tv from 13 years ago… Just using a straight VGA to VGA thought I will get a VGA to HDMI plug at some point. For audio I have a cheap soundbar, but the audio is clear.I could get more specific about a lot of the specs on the different items but honestly for the price this little computer is a great buy and more than enough for a home office and maybe some light video editing and some older games with a GPU upgrade. Mind you there are other options available for ~$132 at the time of writing this(Nov 16, 2022) however what sold me on this was the faster quad-core CPU over dual cores*, more RAM, and larger hard-drive.From completely off to having an internet tab open took about 21 seconds which is fast, handles multiple tabs open and YouTube videos playing while streaming music.*to figure out how a CPU holds up compared to others you can go to https://www.cpubenchmark.net/ and find your CPU. As well you can compare up to 5 at once; which I did against the others and while one was extremely close it didn’t offer the RAM or hard-drive space.

    So Far So Good…I guess
The computer works pretty good for the price! The only problem I found was that it came with a “HP PRO Desk 600 G1 SFF” sticker on it, which wasn’t the actual description I ordered. I sent the information over via Customer Service a week ago, but haven’t heard back. Maybe I’m missing something, but there is a price differential between what ‘MY’ sticker says, and the description in the title of “HP EliteDesk 800 G1 Desktop, Intel Core i7.”
