Great product
I installed the SSD in my 2009 iMac after the original hard drive failed. This product improved overall processing performance “SIGNIFICANTLY”. It brought back new life to an aging iMac…. will likely use for another 5 years. The tools in the kit ARE NECESSARY and very helpful. I recommend this product and brand to anyone needing to upgrade their iMac. The only caution is that it is helpful to watch the manufacturer’s installation videos several times. The process is tedious, attention to detail is critical and helpful to have manual dexterity working with intricate parts during the removal/replacement process. Start to finish took me approximately one hour for the “hardware”. Software and reload of apps was another couple hours…. helpful if you have a backup to rely on.

Follow the instructions exactly
I purchased this for a mid 2010 iMac that a friend gave me. The hard drive was going bad and I had already fixed a 2009 iMac with another one of these kits. The 2010 iMac is much easier to work on than the 2009! All the tools you need are there in the box and the instructions online were easy to follow. Took me maybe 30 minutes from start to finish. That was two months ago and everything is operating wonderfully. Instead of taking 5 minutes or more to boot up, it’s done in maybe 30 seconds. Programs operate much more smoothly and the computer is dead quiet. Occasionally the fan turns on, but I never knew how loud the fan was without the hard drive making noise. Definitely the way to go if you have an old Mac and want to keep it alive. Definitely would recommend this kit. If you feel brave, you could buy the components (SSD and conversion wire) separately, but no guarantees that will work. Fingers crossed that this SSD will last at least as long as the original hard drive (10 years).

Complete kit to replace the main hard rive in mid 2010 iMac
I suspected the un-bootable condition of my mid-2010 iMac was caused by a dying hard drive. I followed several boot up instructions to boot into recovery mode but it only made things worse. It got to the point where all I had was WSOD (white screen of death) which means it never made it to the Apple icon. Even though I had been making daily/hourly backups via time machine I wasn’t sure if the backup was up to date or would even work. Fortunately before I got to a point of WSOD, using the startup recovery process I was able to make a second backup to another external drive for added insurance. As it turns out it was not needed.I reviewed the video on the OWC web site several time to be sure I was clear on each step of the process and which kit to order. I also wanted to upgrade from the internal hard drive to an SSD drive to improve the performance of this 9-year old iMac. The kit came complete with everything needed from the tools needed for the repair/replacement/disassembly of the iMac, to the SSD and the carrier to replace the original SATA hard drive, and an adaptor cable. An adaptor cable is required to add an external HD temperature sensor on the SSD drive. That was also included in the kit. Without it, one of the cooling fans would run at high speed making it annoyingly loud according to sites I’ve read about the upgrade. Iâm sure a full speed condition would eventually lead to a fan failure. The adaptor cable and sensors are also needed even if you decided to go with a hard drive replacement because the original Apple hard drive has this built internally, but check your version of iMac. That info should be available on the OWC (macsales.com) site https://blog.macsales.com/46419-decade-of-upgrade-how-to-enhance-any-desktop-mac-since-2008.Because the symptoms had progressively gotten worse since I first starting troubleshooting, I was reluctant to spend a lot of money on this repair attempt. Well I was really pleased that after reassembling the iMac with the new SSD drive, the Apple logo was back Since there was no operating system on the new drive, it automatically booted up into recovery mode after several minutes. Even this small step was an improvement. According to the directions the new drive was supposed to be formatted for the iMac. However I don’t recall what indication I saw but I had to use disk utilities (Apple recovery) to format the new SSD drive. That is no big deal, but this was the only part that seemed unclear from the OWC instruction video. That is Apple offers several options to “erase” (format) a drive. There was also a scheme selection. I couldnât find a lot of detail on the Internet about it either, so I left the default, “GUID Partition Mapâ and proceeded with the format. The next step was to restore from backup. Keep in mind that the new SSD drive has no operating system on it yet. I used the original (Time Machine) backup that was only a few days old. It took over night to complete. After all of that I was pleased that the system rebooted to the login screen and all applications, data and settings were restored. Macs are really good abut this if you have on-going back ups running.I believe I could have ordered directly from OWC (macsales), but I like Amazon’s ordering method and delivery via Prime. I give 5-stars to both OWC for everything needed to upgrade/replace the main hard drive in my iMac as well as to Amazon for ease of ordering and delivery.

A decent kit to breathe new life into an old iMac
I would have given this 4 stars but I would rather the kt cost a few bucks less and not come with the unnecessary “junk”. it would also be nice if these drives came pre-partitioned for the mac they are meant to go into. One of the reasons for replacing the HDD for an SSD is a hard disk failure and not having a bootable disk in the machine already to partition this drive makes for a somewhat involved process. I’m happy with the drive overall after several weeks. It boots significantly faster than the stock WD Caviar drive that finally died. Only a little data was lost.

This equipment does not work!
I have tried to contact this company numerous times. No answer I was on hold for an hour and a half and still no answer. I install the product my computer did not pick it up I did not even register that I installed a new hard drive. When I went into the CMOS of the computer the only error it was giving me was a fan cooling sensor error. I do not recommend this product it does not work and I want a refund I paid $172 total for this product. I canât even contact anyone to get my refund.

Easy fix that’s also an upgrade!
I know it’s an old machine, but the 27″ aluminum iMac is such a beautiful computer I can’t just toss it on the scrap heap. Now that it has a solid-state drive and maxed-out RAM it will serve us for years to come. The 1T SSD kit came with absolutely everything to do this job in minutes. The instruction videos show all the steps with excellent views of the cables and fasteners and, importantly, how everything goes back together. I’d recommend this to anyone that wants a faster old iMac.

The 1 TB Seagate Barracuda in my 27″ late iMac (Model 10,1) started to make clicking noises. After 13 years of loyal service (!), it was pretty much expected. This kit is simply astonishing. It maxes out the SATA 2 connection available (3 GB/s, no need to go for the 6 GB/s as my motherboard does not supports it) and everything is included to do a neat job.Speaking of, the installation is not what I would call easy but also very feasible, I will rate it 6/10 for difficulty, 10 being impossible. Be sure to follow the excellent OWC official install video while doing it and you will be golden. The most difficult part for me was removing the LCD cables (I have big hands). And since you are there, give the iMac a good cleaning while it is open. After having reinstalled macOS (High Sierra in my case), I was speechless. The speed is incredible, matching my 2019 MacBook Air running Monterey. And the silence is a nice benefit too, the poor Barracuda was so noisy in comparison.I was about to order a new 2021 24″ iMac but after this upgrade, I decided to keep my 27″, add another 8 GB of RAM to maximise it at 16 GB and call it a day. In my case, I don’t need a powerful CPU/GPU, just a stable, quick system for everyday tasks with a big screen. Finally, there is also a sense of accomplishment of upgrading your gear and it is better for the planet. 🙂

This product has transformed our 2010 iMac 11.2 which now boots to the log on screen in 20 seconds. Followed the installation videos carefully (found more than one, referenced both). Removing the screen was tricky particularly un-plugging the small temperature sensor leads from the mother board (you cannot pull on the wires!). Re-installing the screen display port cable requires manual dexterity. Switch on, down load the operating system which takes some time. Use disk doctor to reformat the new drive even though it comes formatted. Reinstall from time machine which also takes some time. But well worth the effort. Should have done this even if the original hard drive was not on the blink.
