Lenovo u510 ultrabook
Great value for the money. Didn’t experience any of the mouse glitches others talked about, so that was good. Only thing I wish it had was a VGA port in addition to the HDMI. Nice and sleek package. Casing around the screen itself isn’t the most sturdy, but the metal outside casing is pretty slick. Great product, great value (about a month’s use so far)

So far so great
I am really enjoying my new Lenovo IdeaPad U510 Ultrabook. I was using another brand of laptop for the past 3 years or so and it was showing its age. I run a small consulting and grant writing business using my computer so things like reliability, storage and computer speed mean a lot to me. First off, I’m very impressed with the overall size and weight. My previous laptop, while powerful when new, was also much larger and much much heavier. With 1TB of storage, I am pretty certain it will take some time to fill the storage space. The keyboard is much easier for me to use. Not sure why, just personal preference, but I really do like the feel and the response. I have to say that Windows 8 takes a bit of getting used to and the new computer and I are working on this aspect of out relationship. This is not a touch screen laptop and I did not want one, but I’m sure there are many who would agree that a touch screen was the target for Windows 8. There are ways to make Windows 8 look and feel more like Windows 7 and I’m using the Desktop screen to help me adjust. So far, I’m thoroughly enjoying the experience.

Not user friendly
In the 3 weeks we’ve had his machine we have identified some nice features; a bright, sharp display and lighted keyboard particularly. Also good battery life and light weight. However, the unit I received has several glaring defects. The first was a complete lack of instructions and much installed bloat ware. It is unknown how much of this is due to Windows 8 and how much due to Lenovo, but it took many hours to finally locate a rudimentary tutorial to help navigate the main features of Windows 8, including how to remove the bloat ware. It took more research to find a program that would restore the Start button. Specific Lenovo problems were an almost impossible-to-use touchpad and weak reception of WiFi signals. The touchpad response had to be slowed considerably before choices could be made fairly safely; otherwise wrong selections occurred frequently. Two finger scrolling quit after a week or so, possibly because of an inadvertent operation that has yet to be revealed. This computer replaces a 7-year-old laptop that had much better WiFi performance with a 1-2 bar signal strength. Running this machine on the type 802.11g band at 2 bars results in frequent dropouts due to timeouts. I was unable to download a large file for supporting our 3-1 printer until the Lenovo was positioned next to the router. Behavior on the n-band seems even worse. We have no 2.2 GHz interfering signal sources in the house (except a microwave), and most neighboring stray WiFi signals are n-band.This machine is not for the faint of heart.

From my journal: My New U510 Lenovo Ideapad Computer! Many things are OS fault,
Many are Lenovoâs fault; I have to click things 2 or more times when I should only have to click them once! The time and charms pop up often when I move the cursor! Finally got my .wps to work, as Iâm not paying for the latest writing program I canât access my journal that goes back to 2005. Finally got the movement on my âStart Screenâ to stop moving, as movement on the screen literally makes me ill! Why do I have to click things like copy and paste 2 or 3 times to get r`done? Why arenât updates detailed, MANY times I wish I’d never updated because it doesn’t work as well as before the downgrade … I mean update! Why does the cursor move to the right on itâs own? Why canât I change my weather location, as I live in San Antonio, Texas not London England! Go to the help file for assistance, one good answer may be found, usually six from the last of unrelated 499! How do I get this thing to stop zooming? My text become large, or my web page small, Iâd like all things to remain 100%, 100% of the time! And why does the page keep dimming? How do I get my computer from turning off when it decides I’ve lost interest cause I havenât been at the keyboard or cursor in a little bit of time? And why do I need a password? I live alone and no one is in my house when Iâm not here, and Iâm a pretty open guy, I wouldnât say anything here I wouldnât say in public! How come the answers to these questions canât be found in the U510 Lenovo Ideapad Computer guide? Why is there a bar I canât hide on the bottom of my screen when Iâm on Desktop, but when Iâm on âStartâ or some web pages itâs not available? Most of the TV you show on âFilmOnâ is extremely liberal! Makes me happy I donât own a TV! And Iâm not real happy with the way the mail is presented, and couldnât access any âOtherâ mail! And canât move from items on my menu to the Internet or my document without closing what I was on in the menu! Why does this OS take away so much control from the owner of the computer? Is there a way to upgrade to XP? I saw in the upgrade to 8.1 I get more games, but I didnât get any games with Windows 8, and when I looked at the games offered (Xbox) Iâm glad they didnât put any of that waste of space on my computer! They’ve automated all the stuff I don’t want and make if difficult to find the things I use! My purchase review may not be allowed because it didn’t say it was a GREAT computer! Oh, I like the lighted keyboard!

black screen issue during startup is major flaw
Bought this laptop in 2014 and it worked great for the first 2 years .. But after that, it started having the issue where the screen stays black when you try to start it.. It comes and goes, but lately it has happened at least 50% of the time. I would recommend buying a different Lenovo laptop, most of their other laptops are really great! This one, not so much..
