Super cool
I’m still up in the air on the longevity of this game system, but it has hundreds of games across several systems at a great price. The only drawback is that it tends to freeze and display a black screen with just music. I had to return the first one I got because it wouldn’t charge.

I’m nostalgic, so it works for me
So, I will likely never get to play all 15000 games that are supposedly available on this handheld device, but the ones I’ve tried are cool. They’ve tried to accommodate various the controls found on different systems with joysticks (at left and right), D-pad, triggers (L1, L2, R1, R2), action buttons (A, B, X, Y), and option buttons (start, select, function). The black buttons make it difficult to see the letters stamped into them. Backlit buttons would be helpful. Some games are mapped well to the controls, and others not so much. Each game’s emulator and setup options are different, so it can be confusing is trying to figure out how the controls work from one to another, especially for triggers and buttons. The D-Pad and joysticks are primarily for directional movements. Though for Nintendo DS games, the right joystick controls a virtual stylus for virtually tapping and dragging items on the screen in place of using a physical stylus. Also, since the DS handhelds had two screens, the trigger buttons and FN button help you toggle between the two screen views and even lay them out side by side.Growing up in the 70s and 80s, there is a lot of nostalgia to playing the older classic arcade games. Back then, it was one game per huge stand-up machine, though there were tabletop versions of some games where two players could sit at each end to compete. It makes me appreciate how far gaming has come and to have experienced the progression. Some of the games, or maybe the emulators, I tried glitched and wouldn’t load properly. Sometimes I got locked into games without a way back to home. The left side of the device has a reset button and power button for those instances. There may be a possibility of using the OTG port to connect to HDMI on an external monitor, but I haven’t been successful yet. Also, I’m looking into adding a WiFi adapter and connecting a playstation style controller. The battery is charged with the included USB-C cable, though the battery compartment is accessible. The wiring and connectors are readily accessible for replacement as well. The online community says that the R40S Pro is stamped with R36S internally on the board. The hardware may be the same, I don’t really know. Maybe the upgrade is in the software, graphics, or just in the marketing. I can’t really speculate.Even with some glitches here and there, I’m focused on what it can do rather than what it can’t. There are hours to explore the wide range of games that span multiple decades. For me the screen is small for my eyes, and sometimes the graphics too dim; so I’ll wear a pair of higher magnification reading glasses and dim the lights in the room to make the best of the experience.

Packed with Games and Fun to Play
This is a neat game system at a very nice price. You get a lot for the money – many, many games to play. The games are organized through a well designed menu system that makes it easier to find a particular game. Making a game a favorite pushes it to the top of the list – a thoughtful feature. The screen is bright and colorful with rich blacks and colors that are spot on – neither super saturated or faded. Controls are decent – the joypad is rubber membrane, with a slightly stiff feel. Joysticks on the bottom are easy to reach with the thumb. Buttons have a nice feel as well. The back shoulder buttons are clicky. The speaker is OK – good enough for reproducing game music, and it is plenty loud. The game system is ready to go out of the box – no adjustments needed for a good game play experience. Battery life is very decent, and there is a battery door on back. The included information sheet has small print – it’s necessary to learn the various button combinations to quit a game or save a state. The game system charges via USB-C. This game system is a good deal and a lot of fun to play.

Retro Gaming Powerhouse
If you love retro games, you’ll love this! I found many of the games I enjoyed playing as a kid. Hopefully, my grandson enjoys them as much as I did.I did not get an opportunity to try the emulators. But my interest was in the old games. I do not think I will be dabbling in the emulators. This thing already has more than enough games.By the way, the console does really have 15,000 games, at least in my opinion. Some of the games are different levels of the same game. Still, there are a lot of games. If this product were marketed under a branded name, I imagine this item would have far more success. Only the branding will keep it from being overly successful. Either way, I really like this handheld console. The screen is much better than I expected. The buttons are quite comfortable and nicely placed, despite its gameboyish easthetic. If you enjoy retro games, this is worthwhile considering. To the makers, would love to see the next iteration with an HDMI port!

First impression; 4 stars
Instead of focusing on the quantity of games (there are so many, that I would say that most of them I don’t even know them even though I was an avid teenage gamer in the 90’s), they would have improved the quality, there is no search option to quickly find the game you are looking for, the battery indicates 28% and when you connect it the percentage suddenly increases to %59, which gives a feeling of low quality and doubt about its durability. The good thing is that it includes Pacman, Bomberman, Contra, Street Fighter, Mortal Kombat, Donkey Kong, Tetris, and more.
