Reliable and Stylish: ASUS ROG Strix 850W Gold Aura Edition PSU
The ASUS ROG Strix 850W Gold Aura Edition power supply arrived without any delivery issues. Upon unboxing, I found the power supply to have a solid build and a nice aesthetic, though it might be a bit garish for a power supply. The packaging was excellent, and the included braided cables were a nice touch.Installation was straightforward, with the power supply fitting easily into the case. It provides ample power to my entire rig, with no issues related to power draw. Additionally, I have not noticed any noise coming from the PSU, which is a positive aspect. While the PSU itself might be a bit gaudy, it fits my build perfectly fine, as it’s tucked under a plastic covering built into my case. The Aura Sync RGB lighting feature, though present, is not visible in my setup, so I can’t comment on its appearance. I haven’t utilized any other special features, possibly because I wasn’t aware of them. The power supply is a bit on the expensive side, but I believe it is worth the money. ASUS is known for making good products, and I feel comfortable recommending this power supply to others.Overall, I am satisfied with my purchase. The ASUS ROG Strix 850W Gold Aura Edition PSU is doing a great job, and I would buy it again if needed.

Not a huge Asus fan, but this power supply is great. No fan noise, and clean power.

Seems to work well as a PSU. LED control doesn’t seem to work. No noises.
Well, I bought this one because it had pretty good reviews for actual quality. You can do better, but this one is pretty high on the list. Biggest complaint I would have would be the price is a bit higher than those that are only barely worse. I went ahead with this one because I needed something that would last me a good long time and this should do it.I lack the means to heavily test it myself. From the reviews this one scores fairly high on voltage reliability, total current, and general reliability. I can tell you I’ve used mine a while with seemingly random on-demand loads up to about 50% of its capabilities (running a LLM) and it hasn’t once shown the slightest signs of troubles. Those of you with high end Intel CPUs and 4090 Supers or 7900XTXs or dual cards may be able to push it harder, but remember that actual wattage isn’t what manufacturers tell you and most people probably will be somewhere in this sort of range when playing poorly optimized games or running LLMs or whatever. (Hook up a Kill-a-watt or a UPS that can display usage and see what you really use.) I think only dual high end GPUs will come close to exceeding safe ranges for this PSU.One other positive is that it doesn’t have particularly noticeable noises. I don’t just mean the fan is quiet — although it is — I mean it doesn’t have coil whine. It’s amazing how many manufacturers are producing devices today with awful coil whine and we’re supposed to just… not care apparently. I do. It hurts my ears on one of my devices. Luckily this PSU has only the slightest hint of a tickling sound if you stick your ear really close to it. Zero complaints in that department. Silent mode on the fan is also quite effective and has been sufficient for my needs. The relatively new PSU I bought this to replace had an annoying coil whine and the fan made a probably not very good noise. Good riddance. The only real annoyance I had is I connected the LED control to my Asus ROG motherboard with Aura support built in and tried to turn off the LEDs. Nothing happened. I couldn’t control them to make them a single color or darker or anything. It would be nice if it didn’t require an Asus board to control the LEDs and nicer still if it worked on all boards that support the thing that it uses. I guess there must be some sort of version 2 of Aura on boards newer than mine or something and they don’t bother to tell us. The good news is that the LED is mostly not very bright, but I hate that it’s stuck in color cycling mode. (When will companies learn to at least use sensible defaults for these things? A nice dark low intensity red or something could look nice and not be painful or distracting.) I’m getting kind of tired of every device I buy for my computer lighting up my room like a Christmas tree.
