Great PC for retro gaming or basic computing
I got this mini PC for retro gaming. For that, it works great. For reasons that should be obvious, I didn’t bother messing at all with the preinstalled version of Windows 11 Pro on the PC, and instead completely erased the SSD and installed Debian. I strongly urge you to do something similar before using this PC.Hardware-wise, the PC’s outer case is basic and made of plastic. It’s powered by an Intel N100 CPU, which is from the Alder Lake 12th generation. This CPU has some nice extras, like Intel QuickSync (and/or VAAPI on Linux) for hardware video encoding/decoding (including AV1). Also, variable refresh rate (VRR) is supported over DisplayPort. These features make for a great retro gaming/emulation box or a media player. I wouldn’t use it for a file server due to the security implications, but gaming offline or on an isolated network should be fine. Don’t expect it to run modern AAA games well.I don’t think the RAM is upgradable. There’s no memory slot from what I can see, and I didn’t want to remove the CPU heat sink to check underneath it. But I don’t see how you can fit a memory module under there, so I’m pretty sure the 16GB of RAM is soldered.The version of Windows Pro that came preinstalled didn’t require an internet connection or Microsoft account to complete setup. According to the system info, Windows thinks this PC is a “VOCBook 16” laptop. There’s also a “lid switch” detected. The BIOS also had Secure Boot disabled.Here are some additional details about the stuff inside the PC:The BIOS vendor is AMI.The 256GB SSD is a BIWIN CSE80A1A100-256G.The WiFi adapter uses a RealTek RTL8852BE.The included power supply is 12V @3A.Overall, this is a fine PC for doing basic tasks or for retro gaming/emulation. It would also be great as a media player, as recent Intel chips are really good at hardware video encoding/decoding.
