Great computer after driver update
Iâve had this computer for probably 2 months now, and it works great. I was worried when I first got it because I bought it to use for gaming and game development and it would hardly run even small 2D games without the mouse buffering. But after some digging, I realized I just needed to update the driver which can be done through GMKTecâs website. After that, it began running very smoothly. I can make 3D models, run my games, use Unity, etc. with no issue now. The fan isnât very loud imo – just a little louder than my HP laptop. It only kicks on every once in a while, or if Iâm opening Unity (but it calms down after the app is actually running). My only con is that it doesnât have any speakers, but thatâs something I almost certainly shouldâve expected. Itâs a really great computer for the price and size and easy to set up – it took me through set up with Windows 11 Pro which I already use and took about a day to sync my stuff. You can also change the BIOS if you want to, though I didnât feel the need to.

Excellent productivity PC with Steam Deck level gaming performance.
I have purchased several GMKtec computers at this point and thoroughly enjoy them. I had a particular use in mind for this PC but first I did some testing in Windows 11 to validate it’s performance straight out of the box. There is a trick to this computer that most users won’t be aware of. There are three different performance modes available in the UEFI that set the maximum wattage of the CPU. This effects three things: Power draw, Fan Noise, and most importantly overall system and gaming performance. To access these settings you can either smash delete while the computer boots up and pray you get into the UEFI boot screen or just hold shift while clicking restart in Windows and then click Advanced Options and then click UEFI Firmware Settings, the computer will reboot and you’ll be in the UEFI menu, use the arrow keys to navigate to Power Limit Select and press enter change it to your selected mode (Quiet (silent operation), Balanced (minimal fan noise, with higher performance), Performance (Maximum Performance and Gaming FPS), press enter again. Then press the right arrow over to Save & Exit, press enter on Save Change and Exit.Out of the box the system has decent gaming performance in Balanced mode modern games at 720p, even on low settings, were playable, with frame rates hovering in the 20-30 FPS range. General tasks, such as web browsing, zoom/google meet, and running Visual Studio Code were snappy and very performant while the computer remained nearly silent sitting directly next to me on my desk. This would be an excellent little desktop coding rig that could be cleanly attached to the back of a monitor to hide it out of the way using the included mount. But now my plan for the device! I wanted a small PC that I can put on the back of a monitor for a “big screen” Steam Deck experience. Something where multiple people could sit in front of it and play some couch coop without needing to hook up to a TV, just set down and play. I first set the PC into performance mode which immediately got me up to 25-35 FPS in all games at 1080p using Steam Deck presets in games such as Shadow of the Tomb Raider, Spiderman Remastered, and Cyberpunk 2077 (Yeah, that’s right, this computer can pull over 30 FPS in Cyberpunk using integrated graphics.)Windows 11 was great, but I really wanted that set down and play experience. So I took it one step further, I installed Bazzite OS on the M5 Plus, all of the hardware was detected without issue and thanks to the Proton compatibility layer in Steam for Linux I immediately reaped the benefits of performance optimizations for the Steam Deck, the computer can now run Cyberpunk 2077 at a stable 30 FPS at 1080p. This means ALL of the couch coop games we want to play will run extremely smoothly at 60 FPS 1080p. Ultimate Chicken Horse, Gang Beasts, Overcooked, etc…This computer is amazingly powerful for it’s compact size, the price is excellent for the hardware and there are plenty of power user options available. It meant my needs and price point for this project.

Tiny, Quiet, Desktop Replacement that can Game too…
I had one other GMKtec Mini PC before, and I was pleasantly surprised at how well it performed. I decided to buy this latest model as soon as it was released, and I’m glad I did. This PC is rock solid, fast, quiet, has 32GB of RAM and 1 TB NVMe M.2 SSD, and it runs Win 11 Pro.This is a lot of PC in a package only about 5″ x 5.25″ x 2.25″ in size. I included a picture showing a full size tape measure on top of it for reference (and I have it on top of the gaming PC it is replacing).I also included a full CPU-Z report, and one slide shows this PC’s CPU to be neck and neck with an Intel Core i9-11900K CPU. It is faster than the Core i5-10400 that I use at work, and I run SolidWorks and Moldflow on that one. I ran my older personal copy of SolidWorks on this Mini PC, and it ran just fine and smooth with the graphics (you DO NOT need workstation graphics to run SolidWorks – single-threaded CPU and then RAM are far more important). The only negative I can think of is that the headphone / speaker output is on the front. It would be nice if there was one on the back as well, so when using on your desktop, the wires can all be coming out of the back (where wired speakers are used / bluetooth renders this point moot).I’m old… my first PC was a Commodore 64, and my first build was a Pentium 75 with a 4x CD drive and a Soundblaster 16 sound card. It truly blows my mind all that you get in something this small, and that it can soundly outperform the large desktop PC it is replacing for all but the graphics. But even with that, my son played Epic Games’ Fortnite on it and was a little miffed at how well it performed since he had just added one of the latest graphics cards ($1,000 4080 Super) to his gaming PC. Of course, this was nowhere near the same performance, but playing at 1080P with mid-range settings, it performed just fine with the 780M integrated graphics. This is a great little computer that can be very versatile… and free up your desk space too.

So far so good ð
You know….my expectations were pretty low going into this but I am pleasantly surprised. It feels solid enough, came on with no issues(lots of updates to do though), and as I had hoped, is total overkill for a movie streaming computer. Extremely snappy, even at higher resolutions(2k/4k). Also very quiet. No issues at all so far. If it lasts this way another month or so I will grab a couple more because it seems like a very nice value so far. Also this particular company seems to have better specs for your money(I looked at a bunch of similar models that were anywhere from$20-200 more).

From my testing, this can handle gaming to work from home to entertainment very well. This packs:-Ryzen 7 8845HS 8 Cores 16 Threads @3.8Ghz base clock (Max 5.1Ghz)-32Gb DDR5 Crucial RAM @5600Mhz SO-DIMM (Max 96Gb)-Radeon 780M 3Go 2700Mhz-Intel i226v Dual 2.5G Lan ports with Wifi 6 card + Bluetooth 5.2-1Tb M.2 Drive (max 4Tb) Dual PCIE 4.0 slots-Dual Cooling fans (Upgrade from their M6 model that only had one)-1 Display port 2.1(8K@60hz), 1 HDMI 2.1(8K@60hz) and 2 Type C USB 4.0 supporting Video.-2 USB 3.2 Gen2 on front and 2 USB 2.0 on back-Oculink Port-Headphone jack on front.-Windows 11 Pro pre-installed and activatedNow, for the performance! Here are multiple benchmarks I did to test this machine’s CPU and GPU:*Tested with the Performance mode in BIOS and all up to date drivers*Cinebench Single core – 106ptsCinebench Multi core – 966ptsGeekbench Single core – 2589ptsGeekbench Multi core – 13191ptsGeekbench GPU – 31717Userbenchmark 1-2 core – 216ptsUserbenchmark 4-8 core – 1068ptsI did not test the gpu much more since the CPU is definitely the star of this machineit definitely performed well, especially in multicore testing.Games. Well, I gotta admit that it runs most games better than I anticipated. Beforehand, the GPU is not going to run the biggest games at high setting and rust was one of those games where it didn’t seem to be performing well. I tested Rust, Cs2, valorant and Fortnite at 1080P and it ran smoothly except Rus which is GPU demandingIt is also important to consider the size of this machine, which runs really well considering that. Since this has an oculink port, you can plug an external GPU and obtain alot more performance, which is awesome and works well. I also tried emulation for NES, Wii and Gamecube and obviously it ran without a problemIn terms of temps:CPU: lowest was 42.6c and highest was 88.4c while on full loadGPU: Sadly not showing up in HWMonitorRAM: Lowest was 40c and highest was 57.3c while on full loadFinally, Pros and ConsPROS:-Compact-aesthetically pleasing-Easily upgradable (internals easily accessible)-Good performance for medium load Gaming-Windows 11 pre-installed and activated-Very quiet, even on full load-Oculink port (possibility to plug an external GPU)CONS:-Performance lacks on bigger games because of the GPU (although, oculink is possible)-A bit pricey for the GPU offered-USB ports are a little roughTo sum up, outside of gaming, this mini pc can handle absolutely anything from office work, video editing, Entertainment, emulation, router, anything. For gaming, you can definitely run a lot of popular games with good FPS AND you can also plug your own GPU to obtain more performance which is a huge improvement from the old models. I would say this is worth it if you are looking for a compact, powerful and versatile machine.

I recently unboxed the GMKtec NucBox K8, which comes equipped with an AMD Ryzen 7 8845HS, Radeon 780M Graphics (3.8 GHz), 32 GB of RAM, and a 1 TB M.2 SSD running Windows 11 Pro. Right from the start, the packaging was sturdy and well thought out, with the PC itself presented cleanly upon opening. Inside, there was a basic instruction manual, a power adapter and cord, HDMI cable, wall mounting plate with screws, and a warranty card. The PC has a solid range of portsâtwo RJ45 Ethernet ports, one HDMI, one DisplayPort, several USB ports (including USB-C and USB 3.2), and even a laptop lock port. The build feels well-designed with proper ventilation, and rubber pads on the bottom keep it stable.Setup was a breeze. The PC powered up quickly, recognized my wireless keyboard and mouse instantly, and got Windows 11 running in no time after a few setup steps and updates. I ran World War Z: Aftermath on high settings, and while there was some lag with my wireless mouse and keyboard, switching to wired peripherals and updating the drivers made everything run smoothly with no stuttering. This unit excels with most 3D games on high settings, and even ultra settings are handled reasonably well. While it may not satisfy a hardcore gamer, itâs more than capable for average gaming and regular day-to-day tasks. In UserBenchmark tests, it performed impressively at the 72nd percentile for gaming, which is solid for a compact PC of this size.Overall, Iâm very impressed. Itâs small, powerful, and versatile enough for gaming and general use. Perfect for those who want a capable system in a compact form factor!

It purred to life pretty quickly and it only had to do a few Windows 11 updates and it was up and running. Will test more on it later but I like it so far – very quiet too.
