TEN BUCKS OUT OF TEN!!
I put together a new computer from scratch for the first time, instead of rebuilding existing units. I definitely needed to rebuild a few before trying this, BUT Intel and the other companies ARE making it much easier to do this. The major pieces are an Intel DP55SB Extreme mobo, i7 860 processor, 650wd-HD(64mb cache-6gbt/sec.), Creative X-Fi Titanium sound, Sony 7241 DVD-RW w/lightscribe, Win7pro64, 2x2gb Patriot Viper 1600 RAM(still have two empty slots), and Sapphire HD5750 card. I got a deal on a couple of pieces, and was able to put this together for $1,100, and saved $200 with some special deals I received, so really $1,400.Amazon is an awesome place to put a computer together. My first DP55sb they shipped me had a big gash in the box, but not the brown outer box(?), and they took it right back. They sent me a new one OVERNIGHT!! I bought the w7x64ult, but got a w7pro64 for almost nothing from a friend, and shipped back the Ultimate to Amazon. They charged me a couple of dollars for the return shipping, cool. By the way, the only software items I’ve had any trouble loading were Microsoft products, 2006 Gears of War(runs super too), and 1998 Greetings Workshop. Still workin’ on Greetings Workshop. Almost forgot, bluetooth took a little while to connect to printer. Was ridiculouly easy, but had never done it, and there isn’t a lot of info on connection process. Embarassingly easy when you find it(taskbar).Processor and fan combo went together and on the motherboard quite simply and easily, bam. Hard to imagine all that power in such a tiny little guy. The w7 experience rating for this system came in at 5.9, which is the basic limitations of the 650wd drive only. All other facets of the Windows Experience rating were 7.3 out of 7.9 possible points. Averaged together it was 7.0 out of 7.9. Who gets a 7.9, IBM’s Blue Monster? This processor is fast with 4 cores and each one is hyperthreaded to a virtual 8 cores. The 2.8ghz can be clocked up to 3.46ghz. I haven’t found anything yet that is challenging this unit past a yawn at 2.8ghz. The motherboard also comes with a very nice dashboard for tweaking and monitoring many items.I went straight to one of my favorite quickie mini games, Half life2: Lost Coast, which has a video stress test to measure frames per second. My 3.2ghzHT XP Gateway with the ATIx1950 always came in at 28-35fps, and ran all the HL’s just fine. I dialed it up on the new system and got a whopping 220fps! I had to put my glasses on to see if there really was a decimal point in there anywhere, WOW! I didn’t realize I was this far behind in the computing world. The next game I loaded up was STALKER: SoC, and it did not disappoint me. I have never been able to get this game to run without plenty of chop suey. In fact, it looked so good on the HD5750/Intel combo that it did not even look like the same game. Windows 7 has so far run every game I through at it, except Call of Duty 2. Haven’t found a fix yet.I had one question, and Intel answered very expertly. If you are thinking about building a computer, this setup worked nearly flawlessly for me, and I’m not a genius, but have some some basic working knowledge. The only two hitches came at start up. This DP55sb mobo will give you an error(digitally too) of 21. Which means that there is a problem with the RAM. I loaded the RAM on the 0/a+b slots, and who knew that it needed to be on the 0 and 1-a slots?! Right next to each other, and next to the processor. If I had loaded 4 pieces of RAM I never would have known. The next hiccup came when loading w7x64pro. The product key entry system is faulty! You’d think they would be paying a group junior high kids 8 bucks an hour to sit and load and reload the operating system all day to make sure that worked properly. This is a known issue, not just me. I will post the answer in the w7x64pro product page review. w7 is pretty cool, stable, and fast.UPDATE_12-2013: After several years of steady running, it is still churning out the terrabytes. The system has had a few changes. I bought a very nice Coolermaster case on Amazon for just over a hundred dollars and it is a solid beast. Loaded now with 12 terrabytes of drives and sporting a second DVD of BluRay, it is seriously a weightlifting program when I need to move it somewhere. I also added a Coolermaster TX3 processor heatsink and double fan combo and the core temps went down from 50c to the 30-40c range, wow. That was a well worth Amazon spent $30 to cool the processor. I used Arctic thermal paste from Amazon too. The Patriot Viper RAM I originally purchased and installed, ran, but started producing a few minor anomalies, and found that the specs were slightly off from what they should have been, darn, no matter how much research you do, you still can err. So I ended up up getting some really nice, cheaper now too, Kingston Hyper X 1600mhz RAM, but still really ends up defaulting to 1333mhz if you don’t set bios to acknowledge the boost. On a negative note, slightly only, just like the Kingston RAM running at 1333mhz default, the IDCC tool that comes with Intel equipment, is just too buggy to be reliable. I have never overclocked a system before, because I always used Gateway computers that never let you play with these settings. The IDCC has some very nice tools to overclock, check temps, and do fan speeds. It took me forever to get the answer I needed from Intel, how to get the IDCC(Intel desktop Control Center) to function. Bios needs to be set on manual, not auto. That was the trick, I thought. So that worked for a while. I actually did my first overclocking, at about 3.2 ghz I believe. Temps went up to the point where it was before the CoolermasterTX3 with the stock Intel heatsink/fan. You turn the fans up a little and it compensates. Eventually though, the IDCC did the same thing as usual, and would never let you back in it. It would eventually freeze at start. So much for overclocking. The system at 2.8ghz runs every new game even to this day with a very low mid level ATI 5750HD card.It would probably be a whole new computer just getting a new $200 video card. The system runs plenty fast with only 8mb of RAM too. These new systems will do 32gb(power the Pentagon?). The only other item I have thought about exchanging out is the Antec power supply of 500watts, but again everything has run fine for several years at 500w, even with the addition of three more 120mm size fans and 10 more terrabytes of drives. Does it really need a 1000w power center?I am really sorry to hear that Intel is diving out of the Mobo business. Their Extreme DP55SB is excellent and may build another soon before they are out of that business all together. The reviews for their new Mobos are very weak and may need to go with a 3rd gen series system instead of 4th.

Lasted longer than Windows 7
I bought this on amazon almost 10 years ago to the day. Paired with an Intel DP55KG motherboard and GeForce GTX 750 and 12Gig DDR RAM. I’ve changed the main hard drive to SSD a couple of times, increasing the size with falling prices and my RAID 1 ‘data drives’ . Also added USB 3. My kid, who was 3 when I built it, is playing Star Wars Battlefront and other Origin and Epic games without a problem today. Adobe Premier works fine. So Microsoft killed Windows 7 today. I thought about upgrading my hardware, but decided to stick with this system. I’ll buy additional RAM (because of Win10) but I think I’ll be fine.

Intel Core i7 860 Processor 2.80 GHz 8 MB LGA1156 CPU I7-860BOX
Excellent product, So far it has gone well although a bit expensive at the time, but I recommend it, it is logical that there is now better quality processors in terms of performance, but is a good option.

Excellent CPU
Pros: so far, it runs all my applications and games with no problems at all, it is also very stable.Cons: I upgraded from a Core 2 Quad Q6600 and I certainly feel the difference, but my Windows Experience index went from 7.3 to 7.5, I was expecting a little bit more.Other thoughts: usually I don’t O.C. my computer so I can’t really share my opinion about the CPU behavior during that process.

Gamer
Well i am a gamer, so i got this processor, with samsung spinpoint harddrive, patriot ddr3 viper series (6gb), evga p55 sli, a bfg 9800gtx+ with 1gb ddr2 ram, an antec trupower 1000w power supply, and an antec 1200 case. This processor, according to windows 7 pro x64 bit, says that there are 8 cores in device manager, and runs at 2.8 ghz. Due to the turbo boost technology, when i am gaming, the thing will speed up, but computer maintains an 36 degrees inside the case. This case is super duper cool, and keeps your things cool too.

New Build
I built a computer by using the suggestions from […] with wonderful success. This is one of the products Rob Williams recommended and I was not disappointed! I managed to get a Microsoft of 7.5 on that scale that runs from 1 to 7.9 for every test except the hard drive which got a 5.9. I think I should have gotten the SATA 6 drive.note: I did not much like the cooling fan that came with this package. I installed it just as the instruction recommended but I had trouble keeping the CPU temperature below 60 degrees Celsius. I bought a little bigger and better heat sink with more contact surface area on the CPU and now it operates around the 30 – 40 range. However, even now when I hit it hard with multiple CPU intensive processes it will take short trips above the 60 degree level. If you plan to stress this CPU to its limits you should search for appropriate cooling options.

boxed product
What I got was not a box product as shown. it was a single CPU without any label or an Intel sticker.

Processor is Fine — Cooler is Something Else
I bought this Intel processor for a new computer that I built. There were no problems with the installation of the processor itself and it has performed without any problems. The problem I had involved the installation of the supplied cooler fan assembly. Apparently it did not seat properly, and the thermal conducting compound was not making good contact. There was no good way to tell that the cooler was not seated well other than taking it back off and looking at the spread of the thermal conducting compound. As a result, the processor temperatures were high – even with light processing loads. I replaced the Intel supplied cooler with a liquid cooling system from Corsair. It was during the installation of that system when I was able to determine the problem with the original cooler. Everything works fine now.

Monté à la place i3 . Il fonctionne. Contrairement à d’autres occasions venues de plus loin. Aujourd’hui je suis passé en w11 grâce à lui .avec une carte de 2008.
