    Easy Upgrade for my Mac!
My late-2012 21.5″ iMac slowed down, then slowed down even more – to the point where closing one program and opening another took 3 minutes or more. All indications were that the iMac’s hard drive was dying. I started pricing out new iMacs and was looking at spending around $1200 when I realized I could replace the hard drive myself for $149. I figured that in the worst case scenario, if I screwed up the installation, I would still have a 1TB external drive for my new computer, thanks to the external case included in this kit. I watched the Other World Computing (OWC) video on YouTube a couple of times to familiarize myself with the steps involved. Swapping the hard drives went very smoothly, and took about 30 minutes to complete. I recommend taking your time and working at a slow, careful pace. After the install I started my iMac while holding down Command-R, followed the prompts, formatted the new drive, and then recovered everything on the old drive from Time Machine. The Time Machine recovery took about eight hours. When it was finished, I was amazed at how fast my iMac operated. I’m very happy with this product, the new life it gave my iMac and the significant amount of money it saved me!

    Great Hardware, Lousy Tape
I bought an SSD and more RAM for my iMac. I also bought an installation kit that provided needed tools and the tape to reattach the display. Installing the new hardware went according to plans. I followed the instructions in the OWC videos precisely. Fired it up and it ran like a charm, faster than ever. That was Saturday afternoon. On Tuesday, the display came crashing down, shattering into a thousand pieces after the two sided tape gave way. I highly recommend the SSD and RAM but would find another source for tools and tape. My tool kit was also missing one of the Torx tools needed to remove the heat sink. Now I need to spend an additional $350 to replace the display. Not happy about that.

    Excellent Instructions & Upgrade
Late 2013 iMac:Easy install. Follow the directions in the video. When you disconnect/reconnect the display cables, just be a little careful – don’t pull the cable from the first socket. Use the notch on the sides to release it.Took me <1 hour for the install.I had the OS installer on a USB 3.0 stick (Mac OS Journaled file system) - This doesn't have to be in APFS format.I recommend using a 3.0 stick. Using a 2.0 Stick will be slow. After the disk change - boot the machine pressing the "option" key.Using disk utility, format your new SSD with the APFS file system option - When done, close the disk utility. It will take you to the install screen. Install the OS and then complete the WiFi setup/icloud and other privacy/analytics option.Interestingly, the OS install didn't take much time. I thought it would take 40-60 min. But it felt like it only took ~15 min- I think it is probably because of the 3.0 stick.I did a fresh install - no time machine restore. It felt like the whole process took less than one hour - HDD swap + OS install. That simple.Computer feels brand new now - remarkable difference in speed!-I read a customer's comment about the Microphone getting blocked - don't know why, unless the adhesive that they sent was a larger size by mistake. Well, if it feels bigger than what they show in the video, just cut it with a pair of scissors. No big deal. I didn't have that issue.

    Great upgrade from standard HD
The kit came with everything needed to install the SSD. Performance is significantly improved over a standard drive so in terms of value for money, it is well worth doing this as opposed to buying a new computer to improve performance. If you are able to follow directions (the videos help a great deal), it is a straight forward process. However, if you are not the adventurous type, you may want to find someone with a little experience. Also, I’ve done a couple of these now. In both cases, in order to reload the operating system, I needed a wired keyboard for the system to recognize the system recovery prompts.

    Fair to good
Only rating three stars because first package I received did not have the sad drive—- which is what I needed ( obviously ) contacted Amazon and a replacement was sent to me. After that, everything went smoothly. I reviewed the OWC videos on how to— and worked well. New install of macOS, Transfer of files from Time Machine and computer back like new! Fun project for me and saved money along the way! Recommend it

Easy instructions not so easy install
I liked the instructions and the link to the Youtube video. A good idea is take the advice and have a iPad or other computer with the video on it to refer to..simple stop the video when you execute each directive. The video could more guidance in how to unplug the drive and plug in the SSD. The iMac I had, late 2013, had a cover in the way, that I finally released by taking off two screws and carefully (since it had wires running into it) moved it a bit so I could plug in the SSD…Likewise on the video cables, more detail on how to unplug would be good, because I almost pulled on the wires.Otherwise the instructions for removing the screen were excellent, and the install of the anchor tape was right on….Take your time.Oh, we need instructions on how to boot up with another source (since the SSD is blank). The new IOS (Mojave) uses a different format, APFS…and my time machine was journaled HFS….I made a USB bootable wit APFS, formatted the drive and installed it, THEN ran the restore with time machine and it worked like a charm. The instructions on the internet etc were confusing…which could lead newer Mac OS into trying to install on a HFS formatted SSD…and it will run slower I was led to believe. This is Apple’s fault not OWC. Again, check this, but formate the new drive APFS then restore if you are using timemacine.

I have no previous experience installing hard drives (Or any hardware with a Mac) and I found this super easy. The drive that came with my iMac had completely failed, and leading up to it failing the computer ran super slow (I’d click Safari and have to wait 5 mins for it to open, and the computer would spontaneously reboot if it tried to do anything intensive). Once this was installed I used the disk utility (Command + R when booting up) and installed the original OS, then I upgraded to the OS I had when I did my last Time Machine backup and now I’m back in business. This drive is so much faster, the computer is better than new; highly recommended – just be sure to watch the install video for your model on their website. For reference I have a 21.5″ Late 2012 IMac, 2.7 Ghz Quad-core Intel i5, 8 GB 1600 Mhz DDR3, Nividia GeForce GT 640M 512MB.

I was ready to scrap my 2017 iMac. It was so slow as to be unusable. I had no idea of the improvement in performance this SSD HD would deliver. Now I’m editing 4K video for the fist time! Very happy!
