Product Description

Raspberry Pi HiFi DAC Pro Hat ES9038Q2M Audio Card PCM DSD LosslessRaspberry Pi HiFi DAC Pro Hat ES9038Q2M Audio Card PCM DSD Lossless

InnoMaker HiFi DAC Pro Hat

This Hat is based on a high performance audio DAC chip ES9038Q2M. The ES9038Q2M handles up to 32-bit/384kHz(PCM), DSD256 and DSD512 data in master or slave timing modes. It use the critically acclaimed ESS patented 32-bit HyperStream II DAC architecture and Time Domain Jitter Eliminator and delivers a DNR of up to 129dB and THD+N of -120db, a performance level that will satisfy the most demanding audio enthusiasts.

On-board two low jitter oscillators(45.158M and 49.152M) to support ES9038Q2M master mode, support more exact sample rate clocks of ES9038Q2M. Different from other DAC hat that forced user to use the IIS master clocks from Raspberry Pi which comes with a lot of jitter, just for save cost and design time.

    Great DAC, Fun Build
The Innomaker DAC Pro is an exceptional value, offering impressive sound quality for a fraction of the price of other DACs using the same ES9038 chip. It features an upgraded 3.5mm gold-plated jack and performs seamlessly with Volumio on a Raspberry Pi 5. Paired with an I²C display for song info and a meter, the setup offers a satisfying DIY experience, even for beginners. The DAC delivers an excellent soundstage with comfortable highs and a full, dynamic sound, even at high volumes. Using a vintage Yamaha receiver and budget Sony speakers, the performance is remarkable, leaving room to imagine how much better it would sound with high-end equipment. Tracks in 44.1kHz/16-bit sound great, but the warmth and clarity of 192kHz/24-bit truly stand out, evoking the feel of vinyl with depth and precision.Even my kids love the music this DAC produces! I also plan to build a custom enclosure for the setup, making it a perfect long-term addition to our home. Highly recommended for an affordable entry into DIY HiFi audio.

    Good sound, great value
By way of comparison, this $55 Innomaker ‘Skylark’ DAC board uses the very same ES9038Q2M DAC as the $1500 Mytek Liberty DAC II. Yes there’s a lot more than a chip to designing and implementing a performant DAC circuit – but do you get 27x the resolution, precision and ‘character’ for 27 x $55?Run a Skylark-based RPi build through a competent amp, headphone or otherwise, and ask yourself: “how does it sound to me?”

Works as advertised and sounds great
I bought this and a raspberry PI 4 (4Gb) as a workaround to a certain vendors voice activated music player that wants to shuffle everything. At first I tried it with LMS and Squeezelite which are not explicitly covered in the surprisingly useful documentation which in fact included enough information for me to make it work. I was underwhelmed by LMS (formerly Logitech Media Server) but have been very happy with Volumio. I would give this 5 stars but the manufacturer’s web site (URL printed on the box) displays a certificate error. Fortunately, the box also contains a link to github with an actual PDF document that describes everything in some detail. It is written as if the author wants to be as clear as possible, instead of the usual ‘few words as possible’ approach. I was particularly pleased with the included brass standoffs (shown in the images) that made for a nice assembly. Combination (PI and INNO board, WiFi only) are running on a single 15W supply with excellent sound and no pops or clicks. PI CPU temp (80% volume) is 53C with just heat sinks, no fan. I am playing music from a 256Gb USB stick and “Crime of the Century” sounds as good as when ‘she’ agrees to play it. Now I’m think I might need one for the garage too.

Works great with RoPieee for those Roon folks
Need to select Allo Katana DAC and then works perfectly.

    This uses 3.5mm xlr output..doh!
I bought this thinking the xlr plugs would take RCA! DOH! I had to buy 3.5-xlr pair of cabkes, then female xlr to rca to convert! I hope fhat works of else i just wasted $160! ALSO, the case I bought works for the OTHER Innomaker DAC! So i had to get the other one with RCA out and another bloomon case that fits THIS DAC! Hopefully both work into my PrimaLuna amp and theXLR to RCA conversion works! Doh! DOH! Unfortunately is DOESN’T work if you convert the 3.5 XLR to RCA via male-female-XLR, so it’s USELESS with an amp with RCA input.

    Quality Music Player
This is a high-quality DAC from INNOMAKER that plugs into the I/O header on the Raspberry Pi. I have a Pi Zero W but used it for a WiFi camera and never needed to solder on the header so I used my Pi 3B. There is a large selection of software to control the DAC. I chose to use Volumio because Hans Beekhuyzen uses it and because Volumio also has a version for the Asus Tinker Board. “MyVolumio Not Connected” shows on the page because I used the free version, I don’t want to pay for a subscription (needed to install the Spotify plugin). My Tinker Board (foreground in photo) has been sitting around practically unused for almost two years. The Tinker Board is similar to the Raspberry Pi except that it has a quad core processor, 2GB ram and 16 GB eMMC. I will set that up next but I first tested the DAC Hat with the Raspberry Pi.I tested the DAC using two power options, jumper removed (powering the boards separately) and with jumper (powering both boards with one supply). My meter showed the boards didn’t use much power and I never heard any crackling. I will test this more later when I connect a bench power supply.Setting up the software was easy enough. High resolution FLACs from the NAS on my Ethernet sounded good. I listened to local radio stations over the Internet.I found that more powerful computers did better with Volumio’s Web Interface. Intel NUC Core i5 and Chromebook did fine, Galaxy Tab S would only perform half the functions and Fire 7 (2019) did nothing but play a song that had already been selected with another computer. The system requirements for the complex Volumio Web Interface doesn’t detract from the quality rating of the DAC.While Ethernet did fine, I had problems with WiFi. It wouldn’t start the DAC (got page not found message) but would work if I started the DAC connected with Ethernet cable then removed the cable and continued on WiFi. I don’t know what I could be doing wrong. There is likely a WiFi discovery setting that I have missed somewhere and doesn’t detract from the quality of the hardware.I like this DAC. I will try to run it with the Tinker Board. Try different software. I might try to come up with a portable power source, I have some 5v battery options. I would like to see what it does on the Pi Zero W.

I am very surprised when I connected the HAT on my Rpi4 using Mo0de and a Jack 2 RCA cable, before I used RPI4 + Allo Boss2 but this HAT is much better, soundwise and the sound stage is calmer deeper more real, i know this is personal however sound is mostly perceived by our brains the ears are ofcourse important but hearing is a function of the brains thatswhy this is so difficult to pinpoint anyway a great product and a friendly customer service.
