I use these c media usb sound cards for a lot of things, and in Windows and Linux they just work. Not audiophile but good enough for 90% of the uses of an external soundcard.

Basically worst option possible, look elsewhere
This device is cheap, and I mean that in build quality. It overheats way too easily, causing it to degrade the audio. Using a short usb extension helps, but the audio still does not sound clear. I picked this up for a Windows 98 computer that I could not get audio drivers to work on. It “worked” but again, with the previously mentioned issues. I’ll be replacing it with a SoundBlaster USB audio card.

These aren’t high-end sound cards, but they do work and provide good basic audio in/out. I am using these on two mini-pcs and they work fine for basic tasks
